The Problem

Virtual teaching exposed what a lot of music departments already knew but could ignore. Traditional instrumental instruction only reaches the students who already play. The rest sit through it. For students surrounded by the music industry every day, on the radio, in ads, on TikTok, school music felt disconnected from the music they actually listen to.

The teacher needed a way to make music feel relatable without dumbing it down. He needed to teach real music theory through outputs students could recognize from their own lives. And he needed it all to work on Chromebooks, from home.

The Implementation

The curriculum got rebuilt around weekly professions. Foley recording one week, film scoring the next. Students weren't studying music in the abstract. They were stepping into actual jobs.

The breakthrough came on a drive. Listening to radio jingles, the teacher clocked a pattern: the same pentatonic scale, over and over. He studied a jingle writer on YouTube, picked up the structural forms ("shotgun" and "donut" jingles), and brought them into class. The hook for students was simple: "Itsy Bitsy Spider" uses the same pentatonic notes. Write the words first, add the notes second.

Students composed 30-second spots using real structure and real sonic choices. They weren't practicing concepts for a test. They were making something for an audience. TikTok-style mash-ups. Film scores. Even Band got folded in, with a virtual ensemble project where students recorded individually at home and Soundtrap stitched their audio into a cohesive performance.

The teacher explained the design choice with a sports analogy. Learning an instrument is like golf: you struggle for a long time before the gratification kicks in. Learning music production is like basketball: the ball goes through the hoop, you feel progress, you keep playing. Both matter. But for students coming in cold, the basketball version is what gets them onto the court.

The Results

Student Jose Pichardo didn't wait for an assignment. After finding Soundtrap on the school's LMS, he learned the platform independently, built on it in class, and started publishing original tracks (including a Soundtrap promo he produced himself) to SoundCloud and YouTube. He wasn't doing homework. He was building a catalog.

Another student, Antony Ramirez, produced a full film score that stood up as portfolio work. The school noticed. Music Technology was added as a third pillar of the music department, standing alongside Choir and Band. Dedicated studio funding was approved for mini keyboards, microphones, and sound padding.
